How to test gold using nitric acid. This is how this testing works.To buy gold with confidence, it is critical to know what is gold and what is not gold. This is how testing with nitric acid works. The premisse is that nitric acid does not react to gold, and does react to copper. Most gold simulants are copper based. To test gold with nitric acid, put a drop of acid on the item’s surface. If the acid does not react, the surface of the item is gold. If it reacts by creating a green, smoky, bubbly fuzz, then the surface is not gold. To test gold plated and filled materials, file the item deep enough to expose inner metal. If the acid does not fiz, the material is gold. If it reacts, the material is not gold. This video shows the reaction of nitric acid to a key and to a gold coin. As you can see, in the key, the acid turns green, heats up, makes bubbles and smokes. In the gold coin there is no reaction.
